8 Tips for Balancing Motherhood and School


Balancing motherhood and school is something many of us will never experience in our lifetimes. It’s hard enough taking care of the kids and keeping the house in order, let alone going to school as an adult. Taking on this many responsibilities is no easy feat. It takes hard work, patience, and perseverance to earn your degree as student mother. If you’re up for the challenge, check out these eight tips for balancing motherhood and school.

  1. Be realistic:

    One of the tricks to balancing motherhood and school is being realistic about your demands and abilities. There is only so much you can do as one person, and it’s completely OK that you’re not Supermom. Don’t overwhelm yourself with added obligations or beat yourself up when you can’t do it all. Be realistic about what you can accomplish and things will be easier to tackle day by day.

  2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help:

    Whether it’s taking the kids to daycare, hiring a tutor, or getting a friend to babysit, you shouldn’t feel ashamed to seek help when you need it. Your family and friends know you have a lot to juggle, and there is nothing wrong with accepting their help when you need to study for a test, catch up on homework, or have a night to yourself.

  3. Make time to relax:

    Student mothers have a lot on their plate, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take a break here and there. For your sanity, you deserve to set aside a little time every day to kick up your feet and relax. Whether it’s reading a non-school-related book or watching TV, this is your time to do whatever you want.

  4. Study when your kids are asleep:

    Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to when, where, and how to study, but one tip that might help all student mothers is to study after your kids have gone to bed. This way you are free to spend time with your kids, make dinner, and do non-school-related activities, but come bedtime, you can get back to the grind when it’s nice and quiet.

  5. Keep your eye on the prize:

    There’s no doubt about it, juggling school and being a mother is extremely difficult. There will be good days and bad days and moments that test your commitment to school. When the going gets tough and you feel like quitting, always remember to keep your eye on the prize — your degree. This is the key to a better career, more money, and a greater life for you and your children.

  6. Delegate responsibilities to children:

    This one applies to student mothers with children who are old enough to help around the house or babysit another child. Don’t be afraid to delegate household responsibilities and chores to children who can help. This will not only make your life a little easier, but it will teach your children responsibility and important skills.

  7. Get support from others:

    Remember, you are not alone. There are plenty of student parents out there who know exactly what you’re going through and can give you uplifting support. There are many student-parent support groups and forums online, and you may even find a support group through your university.

  8. Get and stay organized:

    This one is easier said than done, but getting organized is the one of the best things you can do for yourself while in school. As student mother, you’re going to have to keep your life and your children’s lives as organized as possible. Get a planner, label your folders, keep your notes filed, have supplies available, and do whatever you can to keep your schoolwork neat and organized.
