Online Associate’s Degree in Legal Assisting/Paralegal (Herzing University)

The Associate of Science in Legal Assisting/Paralegal (ASLAP) Program is offered by Herzing University to individuals interested in pursuing careers either as legal assistant or paralegal. A paralegal works under the direct supervision of a licensed lawyer and is tasked to perform essential legal work delegated specifically by the responsible lawyer. Legal assistants and paralegals assist lawyers in legal office administration such as brief preparation and research works. Services that are not allowed to be provided by paralegals include practicing law, setting fees, advising clients or any other form of direct legal services except those allowed by law.

Students need to complete a minimum of sixty-three (63) semester credit hours to be eligible for graduation which is expected to be finished in twenty (20) months or five (5) semesters of full course load. Required courses include Business Law I, Computers and Application Software, Introduction to Legal Assisting, Legal Research, Family and Tort Law, Ethics and Paralegal Professionalism, Law Office Procedures, Civil Litigation, and Legal Writing. Other required courses include a minimum of twelve (12) semester credits of Elective Courses of which at least six (6) credits should be paralegal courses, a minimum of twenty-one (21) semester credit hours of General Education Courses, and a minimum of two (2) semester credit hours of Personal Development Courses. It should be noted that the Computer Applications Course is considered a part of the Paralegal Core Curriculum and is thus replaced by a Mathematics or Natural Science Courses to complete the General Education requirements to be fully qualified to graduate. Students must be able to demonstrate a keyboarding speed of at least forty (40) net words per minute by the program’s end.

Cost of tuition per credit hour is $ 425.00. Applicants must have a high school diploma or recognized equivalent. The university is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
