Herzing University offers the Associate of Science in Medical Billing and Insurance Coding (ASMBIC) program to individuals seeking entry-level positions in the medical records billing. Medical coding pertains to understanding medical documentation and assigning codes to enable swift classification of diagnoses and procedures as guided by the principles of ethical and professional conduct. Possible job positions include medical coding specialist, medical clerk abstractor, and health information specialist.

Students are required to complete a minimum of sixty-seven (67) semester credit hours to be eligible fro graduation. The program can be finished within twenty (20) months or five (5) semesters with full course load. Required courses include Medical Terminology for Healthcare Professionals, Basic Diagnosis Coding, Basic Procedure Coding, Intermediate Diagnosis Coding, Intermediate Procedure Coding, Keyboarding, Medical Business Operations, Medical Office Procedures, Pathophysiology and Pharmacology Corequisites, Pathophysiology and Pharmacology Lab Corequisites, and Medical Billing and Insurance Procedures. Other required courses include a minimum of three (3) semester credit hours of Open Elective Courses, and a minimum of twenty-nine (29) semester credit hours of General Education Courses, and a minimum of two (2) semester credit hours of Personal Development Courses.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent. They are also required to complete an interview with an Admissions Representative. Financial assistance may be provided through grants, loans and scholarships.
