Associate’s Degree in Medical Assisting (Herzing University)
The Associate of Science in Medical Assisting Program is offered by Herzing University to individuals interested in working in a medical office by performing clinical or administrative tasks. While Administrative Medical Assistants mainly perform clerical office duties, Clinical Medical Assistants provide direct patient care. Duties of Medical Assistants may vary from state to state depending on the dictates of the covering state law.
The program has a length of sixty-five (65) credits and is expected to be completed within sixteen (16) to twenty-four (24) months. Graduates of this program have better opportunities compared to Diploma holders in terms of chances for employment and promotion. They are also qualified to sit for the Certified Medical Assistant Exam of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and American Medical Technologies Association’s (AMT) Registered Medical Assistant Exam. Applicants must have earned a high school diploma or equivalent and should have some interest in working in medical offices, labs, or clinics.
Topics of study included in the program are Medical Business Operations, Medical Office Procedures, Medical Terminology, Medical Billing, and Insurance Procedures, Clinical Assisting, Clinical Laboratory Procedure, and Anatomy and Physiology. Required courses include Clinical Assisting I and II, Clinical Laboratory Procedures I and II, Program Review, Externship, Keyboarding, Medical Business Operations, Medical Office Procedures, Medical Terminology, Pathophysiology and Pharmacology, Medical Billing and Insurance Procedures, Anatomy and Physiology I and Lab, Anatomy and Physiology II and Lab, Student Success Skills, and Career Development Seminar. Students will also be required to complete a minimum of twenty-one (21) general education semester credit hours in Information Literacy and Research Writing, English Composition, Speech, Computer Applications, Mathematics, Social or Behavioral Science, and Science or Humanities with a Critical Thinking Focus.
