BS in Elementary Education/Special Education Dual Major (Grand Canyon University)
The Online Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education/Special Education (Dual Major) (Eligible for Institutional Recommendation) is a specialized degree program offered by Grand Canyon University for individuals seeking an elementary or cross-categorical teaching certificate to handle children with special needs in the K-12 setting. Experts in the field of learning disabilities, physical and cognitive impairments as well as emotional and behavioral disabilities teach the courses included in the curriculum. This program requires students to complete a 16-week teaching component on a full-time basis towards the end. Eight (8) weeks are spent on a regular education setting while another eight (8) weeks are spent on a special school for students with disabilities.
Aside from General Education Courses, students are required to complete Elementary Education/Special Education Major Courses. These courses include Exploring Education as a Profession, Educational Psychology, Education Foundations and Framework, English Language Teaching: Foundations and Methodologies, Special Education Foundations and Framework, Instructional Technology, Curriculum/Methods and Assessment: Social Studies, Cultural Diversity in the Classroom, Educating the Exceptional Learner, Curriculum/Methods and Assessment: Science and Mathematics, Characteristics of Learning Disabilities and Strategies to Teach Individuals with LD, Characteristics of Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities and Strategies to Teach Individuals with EBD, Characteristics of Mental Retardation and Strategies to Teach Individuals with MR, Characteristics of Students with Physical and Health Impairments and Strategies to Teach Individuals with PHI, Curriculum/Methods and Assessment: Literacy and Language Arts K-3, Classroom Engagement and Management, Curriculum/Methods and Assessment: Literacy and Language Arts, Social Education Litigation and Law, Arizona and Federal Government, Student Teaching Session A, and Student Teaching in Special Education: Cross Categorical. The program has a total of two hundred (200) practicum hours. Grand Canyon University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.
