Bachelor’s Degree: BS in Graphic Design (Herzing University)
The Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design Program is offered by Herzing University in the online format. Offered either with No Declared Concentration or With Concentration in Print Design or Web Design, students are prepared to occupy various positions in the graphic design field by obtaining the required academic knowledge and technical competencies in interactive and graphic arts. Graphic Design is not only about art and technology but is also about communication and problem-solving.
The total program length is one hundred twenty-four (124) credit hours which can be completed within thirty-six (36) months. The program curriculum focuses on designing and producing work for print, television, multimedia, cinema, digital entertainment and the Web. Possible entry-level positions include graphic designer, illustrator, desktop publisher, web-page designer, junior website developer, multimedia author, and publication designer.
Applicants should have an interest in art and design. Experience in both design software and a hand-drawing technique is an advantage. They should also have a high school diploma or equivalent. Graduates are expected to be able to design and develop solutions to challenges posed by business and graphic arts in the interactive environment as well as the graphic arts systems that involve industry standard hardware and software.
The topics of study included in the program curriculum are Color Theory, Digital Photography, 3-D Design, Illustration Techniques, Web Design, Digital Design, and Exhibition Design. Graduates can choose to further their skills through a master’s degree in order to qualify for positions of greater responsibility or possibly open their own graphic design firm. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association. It provides a strong liberal arts background while developing design capabilities.
