Bachelor’s Degree: BS in Respiratory Care (Grand Canyon University)

The Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care Program is offered online by Grand Canyon University. The program seeks to advance the education of Respiratory Therapists by teaching skills relevant to the vocation. A Bachelor’s degree also enables professionals to offer their services to the community at a higher health care level. It is backed up by the university’s regional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

All applicants are subject to the general standards for undergraduate admission. Degree-bearing candidates must possess an Associate degree in an allied health field from an accredited and GCU-approved educational institution plus official transcripts showing a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 with no transferable credits having a grade below 2.0. Proof of NBRC credentials as a Registered Respiratory Therapist is also required. Non-degree-bearing candidates should be prepared to transfer or complete general education competencies in Effective Communication and Critical Thinking.

Respiratory Care Core Courses include Advanced Patient Care, Risk Management and Healthcare Regulations, Pharmacology for Health Care Professionals, Applied Statistics for Health Care Professionals, Transcultural Health Care, Spirituality in Health Care, Trends and Issues in Health Care, Health Care Systems, Ethics for Health Care Professionals, Quality Improvement in Respiratory Health Care, Respiratory Care of the Critically Ill, Polysomnography/Sleep Disorders, Science Communication and Research, Leadership and Vocation, and Professional Capstone Project. Total number of credits for the program is one hundred twenty (120) inclusive of other transfer, equivalent or elective credits. Applicants must be US citizens, have some college credits and be at least twenty-one (21) years old. Graduates can pursue careers as respiratory therapists, respiratory therapy technicians or home respiratory care providers or pursue further study through a Master’s degree program in Respiratory Care Leadership or Respiratory Therapy.
