BS in Secondary Education – English (Grand Canyon University)
Grand Canyon University offers the Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with an Emphasis in English (Eligible for Institutional Recommendation) in the online format through its College of Education in conjunction with the College of Liberal Arts. This is the suitable program for individuals intent on pursuing teaching careers handling Grades 7–12 students in middle school and high school. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges.
English Major Courses include Exploring Education as a Profession, English Literature I, American Literature I, Introduction to English Grammar and Linguistics, Shakespeare, Education Foundations and Framework, Cultural Diversity in the Classroom, English Language Teaching: Foundations and Methodologies, Educational Psychology, Instructional Technology, Secondary Methods and Data Driven Pedagogy, Educating the Exceptional Learner, Adolescent Literacy, Reading and Learning Strategies for Middle and Secondary Schools, Classroom Engagement and Management, Secondary Curriculum Development and Assessment, Arizona and Federal Government, and Student Teaching Sessions A and B. Practicum consists of a total of one hundred thirty-five (135) hours. The recommended elective for this program is The Novel which primarily focuses on 19th and 20th century British and American works. The Arizona Department of Education requires all applicants for certification to take six (6) credits of Structured English Immersion. Program participants from other states are responsible for confirming certification requirements from their respective state department of education.
Graduates are expected to become effective educators with a particular expertise in English. Applicants should be at least twenty-one (21) years old and have some college credits. Inquiries from Arkansas or Connecticut are not accepted at this time due to certain state requirements.
