Eastern Kentucky University is offering, as part of its online Safety, Security and Emergency Management program, an online Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security. This graduate certificate program is designed to increase one’s knowledge and understanding of the internal and external safety and security issues faced by the country, and the various techniques employed to protect the country from these threats.
EKU’s online certificate program in Homeland Security focuses on the legislation and policies particularly the Patriot Act and the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act. The curriculum consists of 4 courses: Homeland Security Policy Analysis (HLS 800), Critical Infrastructure Protection (HLS 810), Intelligence for Homeland Security (HLS 820), and Hazards and Threats to Homeland Security (HLS 830) – with a total of 12 credit hours. Through these courses, students are able to examine infrastructure of homeland protection systems and the political and organizational factors involved when working in a homeland security team. Furthermore, students will be taught how to identify critical areas in threat and hazard detection.
Since the program is available online, students are able schedule their course work and study periods around their personal and professional commitments. The flexibility afforded by EKU allows students to complete the certificate without making significant changes in their lifestyles.
