Kaplan University offers the Legal Nurse Consulting Certificate Program to registered nurses having genuine interest in law, legal procedure, and working with legal professionals in different legal and healthcare environments. The Accelerated Option can be completed in four (4) months while the regular certificate program takes twelve (12) months to finish. Accreditation is provided by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Graduates of this program can become legal nurse consultants for law firms, government agencies, insurance companies, and healthcare risk management departments. They can also perform healthcare risk management support and education. Basically, a legal nurse consultant is expected to know how to conduct legal research and review medical records, assist attorneys with pre-trial and trial activities, liaison with key witnesses to assist in documentation, provide healthcare risk management support and education, as well as ensure and monitor compliance.

Required Courses include Introduction to Legal Nurse Consulting, Civil Litigation for the Legal Nurse Consultant, Principles of Tort Law and Medical Liability, Medical Records Summary and Review, and Healthcare Risk Management. Cost of tuition does not include textbooks, materials, and course packs.

The program is provided through Kaplan Continuing Education (KCE). KCE Certificates are not for credit and therefore are not eligible for Title IV Federal Financial Aid. Legal Nurse Consulting is only one of the many avenues afforded by a nursing career. A legal nurse consultant handles the data collected by a forensic nurse. Legal nurse consultants are valuable team members in medical insurance claims, malpractice lawsuits, and workers’ compensation cases.
