Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Certificate (Drexel University)

Drexel University offers the Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Certificate to prospective students who are already holders of Pennsylvania Instructional I or Instructional II Teaching Certificate. Offered through the online format, students can conveniently complete the program to comply with recent legislation changes related to teaching English as a Second Language in Pennsylvania. It serves as an add-on certificate which is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

Interested students outside the State of Pennsylvania need to check with their respective state authorities to determine the suitability of this program to their individual circumstances. The program is handled by expert faculty members who have actively contributed to its development while integrating applicable case study experience, practicum, discussions and readings to every course. Students can complete this program within six (6) to twelve (12) months.

The TESL Certificate Program is equivalent to twelve (12) credits which can be applied towards an MS in Teaching, Learning and Curriculum. Teacher Certification Track Courses included in the program are Language Learning and Teaching, Structure and Sound System of English, Design and Assessment, and the Intercultural Learner. Through the program, students are introduced to the Foundational Theory of Language Acquisition and Instruction and guided on the English language’s structural features. Program participants will also get the opportunity to exercise future roles as course developers or action researchers. A case study of a learner of the English language will be a required practicum.

Admissions requirements include a bachelor’s degree, minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0, complete application, official transcripts, two (2) letters of recommendation, and a 1,000 to 1,500-word essay. Students must also meet the State Content Course Requirement of Pennsylvania. Tuition rate is $ 720.00 per credit.
