Online MS in Legal Studies (Kaplan University)
The Master of Science in Legal Studies Program offered by Kaplan University was developed through the combined efforts of law, social science, and teaching professionals. This program has been especially designed for working adults who seek further knowledge of the legal system without the usual pressures associated with attending law school. It is delivered in a very convenient online format in limited class sizes so the level of personal attention from instructors is not sacrificed. Through the program curriculum given, students are expected to develop practical skills in dispute resolution and decision-making, understand how legal principles and concepts can be applied to solve real-world problems, and examine the implications of the law and legal processes in the ethical and moral aspects. The required practicum and research report should demonstrate the students’ knowledge, skills and understanding as applied on actual scenarios. Total program length is fifty-five (55) credit hours.
The program is provided in several intensive study areas to help students develop a particular line of expertise. These study areas include Education and the Legal System, Healthcare Delivery, State and Local Government, and Legal System and the Media. While the core requirements provide foundational knowledge of legal studies, the intensive study portion utilizes a problem-based approach to facilitate gaining a line of expertise.
Core Courses include Legal Methods and Process; Ethics and the Professional; Legal Research, Analysis and Writing, Jurisprudence and Legal History, Applied Action Research in Legal Studies, and Applied Action Research Project. Students are likewise required to take one (1) of the Legal Studies Core Elective Courses offered which include Understanding Civil Responsibility, Understanding Criminal Responsibility, Family and the Legal System, and Contracts as Private Law.
