The Master of Science in Legal Studies with a Specialization in Legal System and the Media explores intellectual property law as applied to different forms of entertainment such as music and digital media. Students will study current issues as well as future changes in the music industry, particularly content generation, revenue, and exposure. Also included in the study are other relevant topics including content ownership and distribution, licensing, and syndication. The program is offered by Kaplan University in the online format and is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Students need to complete fifty-five (55) credit hours consisting of Core Courses and Specialization Courses. They are given the choice between the Applied Research Track and the Comprehensive Exam Track. Core Courses on the Applied Research Track include Legal Methods and Process, Ethics and the Professional, Legal Research/Analysis and Writing, Jurisprudence and Legal History, Applied Research in Legal Studies, Applied Research plus any of the following: Understanding Civil Responsibility, Understanding Criminal Responsibility, Family and the Legal System, and Contracts as Private Law. Core Courses for the Comprehensive Exam Track does not include the Applied Research Courses. Legal System and the Media Specialization Courses include Intellectual Property and Digital Entertainment, Music Content IP – Building Blocks of the Music Business, Current and Future Issues in Music Law, and the Legal Studies Elective.

A Master’s Degree in Legal Studies prepares students for careers that require a comprehensive understanding of the law and its relation to societal institutions. Although the program develops knowledge and skills that allow access to law and the legal system, graduates are not authorized to practice law or sit for any state bar examination. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
