Master’s Degree: MS – Reading and Literacy (Capella University)

Capella University is one of the few online educational institutions in the United States that offers a state-approved Master of Science degree program that specializes in the field of Reading and Literacy. With state-approval, the program meets one of the requirements for licensure in some states. The program is offered under Capella’s Professional Education Unit and is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The curriculum of Capella’s online MS Reading and Literacy program was developed around national reading standards and was designed to prepare P-12 classroom teachers to assess the literacy of their students, and to develop, implement and adapt a reading curriculum to accommodate different learning styles. The program appeals most to licensed P-12 teachers who want to improve on their student’s reading skills or train others on the best practices in reading instructions.

The full program is composed of 47 quarter credits worth of academic coursework, and these credits are earned by enrolling in and passing the required number of Core Courses and Specialization Courses. Some courses have prerequisites thus, it is recommended that new learners consult with an Enrollment Counselor prior to starting on the program.

Tuition may not include the cost of books, laboratory fees and other incidental expenses. To help make the cost of education more affordable, financial aid programs in the form of grants, loans and scholarships are in place and these are readily available to eligible students.
