Master’s Degree: MS in School Psychology (Capella University)
Capella University has developed an online Master of Science (MS) degree program that would help individuals address the social, emotional, academic, behavioral and cognitive well-being of children and young adults in an academic setting. The program, MS with School Psychology specialization, has a rigorous curriculum which stresses respect for individual differences, collaborative problem solving and empirically-based interventions. Learning is conducted through online course work, part I of a year-in-residence, as well as field training experiences.
The full program consists of 70 quarter credits of academic coursework and these are earned by completing the requisite number of Core Courses, Specialization Courses and fulfilling residency requirements. Each credit costs $406.00 and this amount does not include the cost of books and other incidental expenses such as library and laboratory fees. However, to make the cost of education more affordable, Capella University has put several financial aid options, such as federal grants, loans and scholarships, in place. These aid options are readily available to eligible students. Furthermore, some textbooks are provided in electronic format thus reducing external costs considerably.
Capella’s online MS School Psychology degree program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) thus those who are interested to apply for state licensure or national certification will need to enrol in this specialization as well as the Specialist Certificate in School Psychology. Graduates of this program can pursue careers as school psychologists, diagnosticians, crisis specialists or program evaluators in public school districts or work in similar roles in other education settings.
