In 1991 Stephen Shank, former CEO of Tonka Corporation, founded Capella University. Located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, it is a for-profit online university that offers more than 1250 online bachelor’s, master’s (MS and MBA) and doctoral degrees in the fields of business management, health care, higher education, human capital management, information technology, K-12 education, mental health, public administration and public safety.

Capella University has an open enrollment admission policy. To apply for admission for undergraduate programs, proof of a high school diploma and a GED (or its equivalent) are two of the documents that need to be presented. Application to programs may be done online through the University website.

Tuition fees are charged on a per credit hour basis and vary depending on the program of study. Tuition does not include any incidental costs such as lodging, books or laboratory fees, and may change without prior notice. Financial aid, in the form of federal grants, student loans, and scholarships can be utilized to make the cost of acquiring an education easier to bear.
