Stetson University is a private, coeducational learning institution with main campus located in DeLand, Florida and other colleges and schools housed in campuses across the central part of the state like Tampa and Orlando.
Stetson University was founded by Henry Addison DeLand, a philanthropist from New York, as DeLand Academy in 1883. It is regarded as the first university established in Florida because it received its Charter as an independent learning institution from the Florida Legislature in 1887 while Florida State University, which is the oldest site of higher learning in the state, did not get chartered as a university until 1947. In 1889, DeLand University’s name was changed to Stetson University in honor of a benefactor who served with founder Henry DeLand as a founding trustee.
Today, Stetson University offers over 60 majors and minors leading to a Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees in such areas of study as Business Administration; Music; Music Education; Law, and many others. It offers semester-long study abroad programs in Spain, France, Germany, Mexico, England, Scotland, Russia and China, as well as summer programs in Mexico, Austria and Germany, and faculty-led programs worldwide.
Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS) and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), Stetson offers both onsite and online degree programs. Its Master of Accountancy (MAcc) online program is the most unique program currently available to accountants working to become professionals and CPAs.
